Doomsday is basically a mish-mash combination of a number of various movies, and the resulting concoction adds up to far less than the sum of its parts. Director Neil Marshall's rip-off...um, excuse me, I mean "homage to" various beloved movies of his youth starts out promising enough, but soon just dissolves into a stew of stupidity and the dreaded "been there, done that" syndrome.

Alright. Now I'm really confused. I remember a while ago hearing news reports that cold and cough medication was not safe for children under 2. Got that. It's perfectly clear. But in case you didn't, recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory strongly recommending that over-the-counter cough and cold medications not be given to infants and children under two years old because of the risk of life-threatening side effects. I got a zillion "Must-read. Cold medication warnings" fwds from some of my fwd-happy friends when that went out over the news wires. I responded to a few, "Phew, thanks for the info!". But really, it was on the news, all day. and I usually zap all Fwd emails with the delete button--even if it says, don't delete. In fact, faster if it says don't delete.

My fellow moviegoers, let me tell you of a time known as the 1980’s. Former actor Ronald Regan was president, and in Regan’s America, an odd duality existed in the movies produced during that era- sex was bad (and usually punishable by death), but violence was welcomed, especially when it was directed at dirty, godless non-Americans. Known to many as the Golden Age of Action, the 80’s box-office was firmly ruled by macho, massively muscled one-man armies such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Stephen Seagal. Combined, these gentlemen killed enough people on-screen to fill the Grand Canyon hundreds of times over. Plots? Character development? Who needed them? As long as we had unlimited ammunition, sharp bladed weapons, and plenty of bad guys to insert them into, audiences were elated.

Party 105 Expands to Nassau County After ten years of broadcasting exclusively to Suffolk County, The Morey Organization's (TMO) flagship radio station, Party 105 (WDRE 105.3 FM), is expanding to Nassau County. Party 105's programming will be simulcast on 101.5FM out of Plainview. You will now be able to hear Party's high energy mix of Top 40, Hip-Hop and heritage Dance music throughout Long Island from the Cross Island Parkway through the Hamptons. "We are very excited to be in Nassau County", said Party 105 Operations Manager and morning show host Vic Latino. Latino also states, "There has been a huge hole in Nassau County for this music ever since the city stations stopped playing this high energy format. A few days into the simulcast and the response from listeners and advertisers has already been unreal." TMO is launching an extensive marketing campaign in Nassau County. A Few years ago i met these two young Kids from long island who are in a band called JRAD,They graciuosly took me into there home and gave me and my son a one on show,and holy smokes, they were great to say the least. They made a studio DVD ,gave me a signed copy (i asked because i know the'll be big someday). Check em out ,you won't be disapointed. There new cd is available on Itunes, I'm definetly picking up a copy. I wish these guys all the best,they deserve it. www.jradrocks.com .....

Hi Folks, We wanted to remind you about a much-anticipated performance coming up just shortly into the New Year. Although we’ve been rehearsing weekly for some time now, we don’t actually do many live shows at all (historically, at best two shows a year). So each show is a bit of a musical “event”. The band’s last two performances were at sold-out large hall auditorium/theater venues -- but we’ve decided to try something very different this time. We hope the cool concept and hip venue will help convince you to sneak out for an enjoyable evening of gourmet food, a large full-service bar, stellar live entertainment, and good company. It’s a much smaller venue than usual so you may want to get your tickets now (really). New music and new visuals have been added – things are fresh and evolving -- and we’re real excited about this up .....

Disaster Assistance For Queens And Brooklyn Reaches More Than 6.2 Million
New York, NY – State and federal officials have approved more than $6.2 million in disaster grants and low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damages during the August 8 severe storms and flooding.

- $4,229,779 in grants to 1,936 households has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for individual and household assistance. These grants include:
- $3,657,781 to 1,530 households for home repairs and renting alternative housing, and $571,997 to 406 households has been provided by the State’s Other Needs Assistance Program (ONA) and FEMA for other serious needs.
- $2,004,400 in low-interest disaster loans has been approved for 59 households and five business owners by the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
The deadline for Brooklyn and Queens residents to apply for assistance is now extended to November 16. To register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), call toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday - Saturday. Long Island
Long Island is a part of New York State, located at the east of Manhattan and physically comprises of four counties - Brooklyn, Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, although Brooklyn and Queens are mostly considered NYC.
Long Island is a place worth visiting during all seasons of the year. Spring brings with it winding roads, field with blossoms and greenery, and if you love beaches, spring here brings you an early tan. In the summer, you can expect concerts by the sea along with carnivals and many other recreational activities. Autumn is the season for long and quiet walks where you will really relax yourself. Open meadows, wine county, tranquil ponds and wildlife sanctuaries are where you have to head for when in Long Island in autumn. The winter brings out the beauty of Long Island where you have more than outdoor splendor to look forward to.
Food is beautiful; entertainment enthralling, great shopping experiences and visits to art galleries, museums, dance and theater are all in the calling during winter in Long Island. If you want something to warm yourself in winter, you can always go walking on empty beaches, sledding, cross country skiing, ice skating or just go watching deer.
Long Island boasts of quaint and colonial villages worth visiting where you can have a look at its preserved past. The adventurous can have a go at ocean or surf fishing where you can have a picture taken with a record breaking fish. Long Island New York
Long Island, having an area of 3567 sq km and jutting out about 132 km from the NY Harbor, is the largest such land mass in the Continental United States. It is divided into the counties - Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau and Suffolk – and has a combined population of over 7.5 million people, making it rank 17th in the list of the most populated islands in the world. But, given the large influx of people into Long Island, which has been continuing for many years, contours that divide NY City and its suburbs are obliterating faster than ever; these days, Brooklyn and Queens are considered parts of an expanding NY City, and only Nassau and Suffolk Counties have a conventional county government in place.
The flow of immigrants into Long Island started began at the dawn of the last century, when people came in large numbers to settle in Long Island boroughs, mainly owing to its proximity with NY and also for business purposes, and as the commerce grew, the place also gradually evolved into one of the richest dwellings in the NY suburbs. If to take into account its current demographics, Long Island has a long list of some of the richest Americans as its residents, a feat virtually unmatched by any other city in the whole US. For a new comer to NY or its suburbs, keep in mind, Long Island is one of the most expensive residential locations in the whole NY area.
For tourists, Long Island and its neighbor - NY City - have enough places to fill the vacation schedules of anybody for more than a week. Starting from its western end, Brooklyn, it is home to some of the hottest tourist destinations in NY, some of them being the Coney Islands Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Old Stone House, Brooklyn Bridge, and Prospect Park. P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, Socrates Sculpture Park, The International Express, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, New York Hall of Science, Queens Botanical Garden, and Queens County Farm Museum are the gems of Queens County.
Suffolk County is home to renowned museums such as Vanderbilt Museum, Walt Whitman Historic Site, and the Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences and also some of the most alluring seashores in the region. But a visit to Suffolk is never complete unless one spends some time feeling the diverse world presented by Long Island’s two forks – the laid back North Fork and the more uptown South Fork. North Fork’s farm stands, vineyards and the many charming villages, and South Fork’s upscale shopping destinations are not to be missed in any case.

Eisenhower Park, Belmont Racetrack, South Shore beach, Cradle of Aviation – the aviation museum - Garvies Point Museum, Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Nassau Coliseum, and Planting Fields Arboretum some of the tourist places worth paying a visit in the region.

Last Aug. 3, ERA Real Estate announced that it has started providing its residential property listings throughout the country to Google Base. You’ve heard of Google but what’s Google Base? Save the Internet
Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign.

Long Island Exchange was awarded a silver and bronze certificate of excellence in last week's 2006 BOLI awards on Long Island
May 17, 2006 -- Long Island Exchange was awarded a silver and bronze certificate of excellence in last week's 2006 BOLI awards on Long Island for its http://www.longislandexchange.com Web site. This was the company's first year entering the competition and took a silver certificate for "Internet, News, Media and Publications" also taking home a Bronze certificate in "Internet Independant."
"This is our first year competing in the competition and we look forward to many more to come. The turn out was fantastic and we are just starting to get our feet wet with Long Island Exchange. We really can't wait for next years event. It was a great pleasure to be here" said John Colascione, the company's owner and founder.
Each year the Long Island Advertising Club (http://www.liac.org ), located in Port Washington Long Island, holds the annual BOLI Awards, founding in 1973, which have become one of the most prestigious business competitions in the major metropolitan New York region. Best of Category statues as well as Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates of Excellence presently reside in 31 states and three foreign countries.
The winners of the 33rd annual BOLI awards were announced on May 9th at The Inn at East Wind in Wading River.

Old Stone House in Brooklyn
Old Stone House is a replica of a 17th century Dutch stone farmhouse that has close ties with the tumultuous medieval periods of American history. It was here the Marylanders halted the British advance and let the American army escape to the safety of Brooklyn heights, meanwhile sacrificing two-thirds of their men. The house now functions as a historic interpretive center dedicated to its vital role in the American Revolution and in the evolving histories of Brooklyn, and more broadly, New York and the United States. The museum is situated in JJ Bayne Park, in the Park Slope/Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn.
The Old Stone House was originally built beside the Gowanus Creek in 1699 by Nicholas Vechte. During the Battle of Brooklyn, owing to the strategic position of the house, it was taken over by the British and converted it into an artillery base to fire at the Americans fleeing to the safety of American forts across the Gowanus Creek. But in a rare act of bravery, General Stirling, alongside 400 odd Maryland Continental soldiers, took on the British fortress, in the process overrunning it twice, before eventually being outnumbered by the more organized British army. This valiant defense by the Marylanders (which left more than 90% of the Marylanders dead or captured.) gave the American army ample time to escape across the creek to the Brooklyn Heights, and finally Stirling surrendered. Perhaps it was this battle scene that Washington witnessed from the fortifications on the Brooklyn Heights that prompted him to make his famous comment: "Good God, what brave men must I lose this day!"
In 1797, the house was sold to the Cortelyou family. Next time, it came into public attention near a century later, as the first clubhouse of the Brooklyn team, which would later become the Brooklyn Dodgers. The house was demolished in 1890, only to be rebuilt with the same stones, with which it was made for the first time, 40 years later. It would be restored two more times, in 1970s and 90s, before eventually transforming it into a museum and historic center, aimed at educating the public on the rich history of Brooklyn and the valor of its soldiers during the war days.
The first floor of the Old Stone House has an educational center displaying changing exhibits while the top floor houses a community room. The exhibitions are backed by lectures, public programs, and other educational events. Old Stone House is available for tours, but prior appointment is required. The museum is open of Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM to 4 PM.

Socrates Sculpture Park
Socrates Sculpture Park – spread over 4.5 acres – is the only public space lying within the metropolitan area that is exclusively dedicated to exhibiting large scale outdoor sculptures, and other similar artistic creations. It is located on the Eastern River, at the intersection of Broadway and Vernon Boulevard.
The Socrates Sculpture Park was the brain child of American sculptor Mark di Suvero, who converted an illegal riverside dumping site leased from New York City's Department of Ports and Trade for $1 per year into a stunning exhibition site and open studio of contemporary outdoor sculptures. It took a year to clear the dumping site and the park was formally opened in 1986. Since then, the park has played an active part in revitalizing the social, economic, educational, and cultural life of the Queens community through activities and programs, which has eventually helped in bringing together various artists, their art, and likeminded public of the Long Island in general on the same platform. No wonder, today, the Socrates Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned outdoor museum and park offering artist’s residency programs and a wide spectrum of public services.
At the Socrates Sculpture Park, exhibits are frequently rotated (not permanent exhibits), and every year the sculptors from America, Europe and other parts of the world are joined by dancers, musicians, painters and film makers to create a unique world of multi-media modern art showcase, something unparalleled anywhere else in the globe. Other initiatives include workshops and other training programs for budding sculptors and school children, fellowship programs and other community development activities.

The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages is situated on 1200 Route 25A, in the historic village of Stony Brook, New York. The building is considered as Long Island's largest privately supported museum of its kind. The museum occupies over nine acres of park-like area in the historic village. The museum features beautiful landscaped gardens frame, 18th- and 19th-century edifices, and an onsite gift and book shop. Long Island Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM) for its excellence in exhibitions and educational programs.
The Long Island Museum is comprised of three separate museums - The Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum, The Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage House, and The Art Museum.
The Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum features changing exhibitions on American historical and other social themes. The museum has a gallery of 15 miniature rooms adorned in authentic period detail. The museum features one of the top three hand-carved antique duck decoy collections in the United States.
The Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage House features 10 galleries displaying authentic carriages. The museum’s collections consist of more than 250 horse-drawn vehicles widely accepted as the finest in the United States. Regular display includes over 100 carriages together with other rare artifacts from the carriage era.
The Art Museum features two galleries showcasing changing exhibitions of American art, including the works of important American artists such as William Sidney Mount (America's premier genre artist), Louis Comfort Tiffany, William Moore Davis, Winslow Homer, and others.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden (BBG)
Brooklyn is the most populated amongst the five boroughs that constitute New York City. But amid the concrete jungle of sky scrapers and bridges lies this 52-acre world of vegetation – trees, shrubs and flowers – which for any visitor appears to be a different world, much distanced from the urban hustle and bustle. If to go by the New York cultural department, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is the fourth largest cultural attraction in the city.
Founded in 1910, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, in its true sense is not a single garden, but it is a collection of gardens and many rare species that is not found anywhere else in this world. Some of the gardens within the garden include the Children’s Garden, tended exclusively by kids in the age group 3-18, the Cranford Rose Garden, displaying over 5,000 bushes from 1,200 odd species, and the Herb Garden boasting more than 300 varieties. It appears that people have taken a leaf out of BBG’s book, as there is an apparent increase in the number of people turning to this type of gardening, especially within in the household domain.
The major attraction in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is the Japanese Garden, complete with a Chinese heart shaped pond, view pavilion, waiting house, bridges, miniaturized landscape and a blazing torn red gate. In fact, the list of gardens and other attractions in BBG are never ending; there is the Fragrance Garden, designed especially for the blind, the Shakespeare Garden, Celebrity Path – Brooklyn’s answer to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame - Steinhardt Conservatory, which is home to the stunning C. V. Starr Bonsai Museum, and many more. For a plant kingdom lover, this is the maximum one can imagine within an urban setting. And nobody has ever gone back disappointed from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden till date.
The Gardener’s Resource Center at BBG caters to the gardeners in the making, while the Visitor Center provides valuable information on the garden history, programs, and upcoming events. Also, there is a refreshment center, Terrace Café, and a Garden Gift Shop, which sells everything from plants, seeds, and soil to containers, garden tools, gardening books, and stationary.
The entry fee to BBG is $3 for adults and half of that for students and seniors. Children in the age group 6-16 need to shell out only 50 cents for a full tour of the garden, while BBG members and kids aged below 5 are facilitated a free entry. Guided tours are offered in weekend afternoons .This does not need any advanced reservation.

Old Westbury Gardens, located in Old Westbury, New York, is the former home to the esteemed Phipps family of Long Island.
