Long Island New York

Long Island is an island that resides around the southeastern part of New York. It lies adjacent to Manhattan. The island lays partially on the Atlantic Ocean and has four counties: Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau, and Suffolk. A body of water separates the northern shore and Connecticut; this body of water is called the Long Island Sound. There are many beach towns in the region. The most popular include Montauk and the Hamptons.

Long Island remains the largest island within the United States. It joins the mainland using several tunnels and bridges throughout New York City. There are also ferries that can be taken from Suffolk to Connecticut.

The Dutch settled the Western portion of Long Island, while English Puritans traveling from Connecticut, settled the Eastern portion. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington captured Long Island in the Battle of Long Island.

In the early years of the 20th century, Long Island transitioned from farms and such to the greatest example of an American suburb. Robert Moses created many parks for others enjoyment in the Long Island area. Long Island is one of New York City's most popular retreats.

Following the second World War, the population of Long Island grew dramatically. Many people who worked or lived in New York City decided to head to Long Island after the war. The Island remains a strong immigration center within the United States. There is an essential diversity in Long Island that much of the U.S lacks.
